Sean Kennedy does a great series called Patrolling which can be found for free from his website: http://www.rantmedia.ca/patrolling/
be well.
p.s. remember.. take everything you see or hear.. even the stuff I show you with some personal discretion… everything is not what always what it appears to be.
You walk down your street, sit on a bus, or ride the public train system of any major city in the world. What do you see?
Advertising.
It’s everywhere.
Trillions of dollars worldwide go into research, development, production and placement of this form of visual pollution.
Televi$ion
All other arguments aside, lets say you’re watching television to catch a specific program that you happen to enjoy. According to gaebler.com, the standard half-hour of television contains 22 minutes of program and 8 minutes of commercials - 6 minutes for national advertising and 2 minutes for local. If you happen to be a little less aware of the dangers, you may apart of the “average American” segment whom spends as many as 4 hours a day watching television. This subjecates you to around 64 minutes of re-programming a day, just under 8.5 hours a week, 16 days a year
During this period corporations are rewiring your head; Brand-name is cool, Soda helped save the environment, goto ScamU and learn a basic trade you NEED in the world, and Dope will fix that problem you have with your life.
Radio
If you tune into your favorite corporately owned Radio station (pretty much all of them) the problem is similar. The music breaks, then, bells, whistles, gongs, and alarms break your concertration. The announcer gives his quick-sell, followed by another annoying noise then repeat. Jesus doesn’t even know the potential subliminal messages sent during this time period.
Personal advertising.

Normal Joe or Jane Consumer walks up to you. What do you see first? For the majority of studies out there, they say the shoes. You instantly view the type, condition and what else? The brand.
Moving up the front (you usually get nothing from the pants they’re wearing except give or take a few trendy brands), you stop at the torso. Some dude in the 70s decided to put a logo on a tshirt and we’ve been fucked ever since. Nice job asshole, you’ve turned us into walking billboards. Continuing up, you see their nifty white, Pear-brand “earbuds” that have become the trendy norm for earwear, then their hat which will either scream out a brand name or maybe a bit of corny text.
You can continue this trend to the world around you.. specificly colored balloons, bumperstickers on tailgates and windows, stickers everywhere, and lately, wristbands. All adding to the visual pollution we’ve come to accept in our society.
Make your choice.
Over the course of the last 7 months I have realized the following points:
I will try to elaborate on each of these points individually as time goes on. I’m going to switch up the format of this “blog.” Instead of a place for funny or clever items.. I will now use it to post world events that seem to fall between the cracks of our collective conciousness. I will also use it to show ways I have found to survive and fullfill basic human needs in modern living without sacrificing core values. I will also post art from individuals I see as being true to both themselves and their work. I welcome any and all constructive criticism and questions.
Be well.
